RTE SPECIES & HABITAT SURVEYS
NEW ENGLAND

In northern New England, the Spotted Turtle (Clemmys guttata), Blanding’s Turtle (Emydoidea blandingii), and Northern Black Racer (Coluber constrictor constrictor) occur at the northern limits of their ranges. In Maine, these species are state-listed as Threatened (Spotted Turtle) or Endangered (Blanding’s Turtle and Northern Black Racer), and many development projects require detailed study of their habitats.
FBE’s Wildlife Specialist, Elliott Boardman, leads targeted field surveys for rare and threatened reptiles, including Spotted and Blanding’s Turtles. These surveys follow the current and best professional standards in wildlife ecology, (e.g., for Spotted Turtles, the 2019 Regional Spotted Turtle Assessment Protocol developed by the Spotted Turtle Working Group).
Elliott also has experience surveying for other rare species, including the Wood Turtle (Glyptemys insculpta), Roaring Brook Mayfly (Epeorus frisoni), and Northern Spring Salamander (Gyrinophilus porphyriticus). Field data collected by FBE are carefully analyzed and presented in clear, concise reports that meet the needs of clients and permitting agencies. In addition, FBE acts as a knowledgeable liaison with natural resource agencies, ensuring effective communication and regulatory compliance throughout each project.
