COMPLIANCE MONITORING
NEW ENGLAND

Salmon Falls River
Maine/New Hampshire Border Towns
Since 2006, FBE has been successfully conducting water quality monitoring on the Salmon Falls River on behalf of four Maine and New Hampshire municipalities operating wastewater treatment plants along the river. The monitoring is conducted in accordance with a Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) workplan under the Clean Water Act. Monitoring is conducted at seven locations during three sampling events in August and September. All samples are collected by teams in canoes in the early morning when dissolved oxygen is likely to be at its lowest levels each day. Sampling includes a suite of nutrient parameters, integrated core depth sampling, plus salinity at tidally influenced locations. Each year, the annual report, all raw data, and field documentation are submitted to Maine Department of Environmental Protection and New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services for review and approval.
Municipal Closed Landfill Monitoring
Maine
FBE works with municipalities across Maine to conduct annual monitoring at closed municipal landfills in accordance with the Maine Department of Environmental Protection's Post-Closure Monitoring Program. FBE staff conduct low-flow groundwater monitoring at monitoring wells around the landfill, as well as at residential wells near the landfill. FBE also works with municipalities to ensure that the landfill is properly maintained following its closure and that the municipality maintains an updated environmental monitoring plan with the State.
