Water Quality Monitoring

FBE conducts annual water quality monitoring in Kezar Lake and its watershed, tracking long-term trends and climate change impacts. Our work includes sampling at lakes, ponds, and tributaries to assess key water quality indicators, supporting efforts to protect one of Maine’s clearest lakes.

Lake Waukewan Drinking Water Assessment
Meredith, NH

As part of a NHDES Source Water Protection Grant, FBE monitored Lake Waukewan’s water quality in partnership with local organizations and volunteers to protect Meredith, NH’s primary drinking water source. We conducted sampling to assess lake health, cyanobacteria risk, and potential cyanotoxin exposure, informing the development of a cyanobacteria monitoring and response plan.

In-Lake Treatment Planning & Permitting

FBE assesses internal phosphorus loading dynamics to identify appropriate in-lake treatment options for controlling phosphorus and reducing the risk of cyanobacteria blooms in lakes. With Certified Lake Manager Laura Diemer, FBE has successfully facilitated several alum treatments in New England and continues to lead similar projects, ensuring safe and effective phosphorus control to reduce cyanobacteria bloom risk.

Benthic Sediment Collection & Analysis

FBE provides sediment coring of lake sediments to assess sediment characteristics, including organic content, water and solids content, biologically labile phosphorus fractions, and other elements, such as heavy metals. These services typically help inform management actions as part of larger projects.
